I Hate How Relatable This Is…

I hate how relatable this is…

Seeing wicked with the fam today and yes once again i was right. Conservative people CAN watch wicked and enjoy it and get the message because they see it differently. On the History scene (which mirrors the government trying to block out history lessons on slavery) and the Something Bad scene (where they talk about animals losing their rights and ability to speak), my mom equated these to us trying to erase the Bible, and (racist) white people being publicly shamed for speaking (racist) things.

Glinda: I loathe your Docs!

I’ll say this, if anything, every single description of Elphaba’s shoes in the book makes it more than obvious she’s a lesb. there’s way more descriptions of shoes than you’d expect and they’re all gay boots.

I am also very well fed from both of them lol, but I wonder how much of the mixup happens due to all the inaccurate white-passing Griddlehark fan-art… 🤔

(Coming from a pasty white person who went to their first queer Halloween party as Gideon full disclosure)

Happy to live in a universe where I sometimes come across fanart and am momentarily confused bc which ginger gay with the golden eyes and sunglasses is it??

And then each subsequent book continues to flip expectations of the genre like the cohort flips planets!

By the end of Gideon we’re already reeling, but then Harrow comes along and really shows off the brilliant inner workings of the setting and magic system all while gaslighting us on the very existence of the previous book. 😅💀

The thing that really gets me about the Locked Tomb series is that from a worldbuilding perspective it’s YA catnip. Like any other author would have started it out from someone low ranking in the cohort, maybe falling in love with a rebel or vice versa, introducing parts of the world slowly. There are even houses to sort yourselves into! It’s perfect! That would have been a good story in and of itself! However Tasmyn Muir started in the deepest depths of the equivalent of death cult Amish territory from the POV of someone trying to escape and join the terrible death army, and it works. It’s like if you started explaining the concept of Star Wars with a clone from one of the tanks in Palpatine’s lair. Obsessed with her as an author.

Bleak, but accurate.

Reread wicked again. I love the musical with all my heart but the book has something really special to it. It goes against the whole chosen-one trope and instead details the lives of children, students, adults moving through the world while facism rises around them. And like regardless of what their views are- they’re pretty powerless to stop it. They can only experience it.

I understand that this may make the plot seem slow or oddly paced but it’s not really about the hero’s journey, it’s about ordinary people’s lives. Elphaba is NOT the hero, or even the anti-hero. We might agree with her morals over other characters but she actually accomplishes very little. Almost every moral crusade she undertakes fails. She dies as just one of the many symbols of the resistance. The most productive rebellion we hear about comes from the Vinkus allyships and that happens in the background.

Wicked isn’t a book about good saving the day, or about compassion unifying the country.

At the end of the book, Elphaba and Glinda are divided by morals, Fiyero died for a cause he was never that much a part of, and Boq and the others have retreated into the background to protect their own. The wizard leaves yes, but he leaves behind a society in political turmoil. Munchkinland is facing re-annexation, the Vinkus is under attack, the Animals and the Quadlings have been shoved almost out of existence. The wizard can’t even be called the true Villain because his leaving does miraculously turn society back to “good”.

Wicked is about radicalism and facism can very quickly become the norm for a society through a series of tiny and almost ignorable steps for those not directly affected. It’s about waking up and realizing that all of a sudden you can’t remember the last time you saw an Animal walking free through the city.

A frail, bloodstained nun dragging a greatsword behind her attuned to the Aspect of Kiriona stumbles towards a boon symbolized by a pair of golden sunglasses…

“Griddle?!?? No, it can’t be… in the name of Drearburh and its tombs I beseech you!”

*da-dong/bla-blang*

“Sup Night Boss! Quite the blade you got there… you’ve been sharpening it right? Right?? Harrow??? Look, we’ll fight about it once your spindly ass is out of this nightmare but at least take one of these before you pass out okay…”

One Flesh, One End. Bitch (Legendary): Your bone shards now regenerate over time instead of your call.

First Flower of Your House: Critical melee hits against unarmored enemies now apply ~slow~ for 3s.

Ortus, Ortus, Ortus (duo): Boons that modify ~litany~ damage now apply to your greatsword attacks as well. Health regeneration is disabled.

after all this is over i want supergiant to make a video game of the locked tomb. they can call it Hades 3

Truly one of the best side-effects 😭

First pass through: Oh Gideon you poor baby 😭😅. Coming from someone who’s been in recovery from an awful haircut for just over a year now, I feel your pain.

Second pass through: Okay I know Harrow always looks pissed… but I’m detecting a higher degree of resigned acceptance than normal from her here. Like, she’s suffering from the awful cut just as much as her situation-ship is, but like with everything else in her life, Harrow sees it as a just punishment for her sins and throws bones at Gideon to cope 💀

Thank you OP. These two panels were great!

P.s. Plus the mental image of Harrow holding clippers menacingly just sends me.

P.p.s… (bear with me)

Okay actually scratch my original thought about Harrow. It would TOTALLY be in character for her to be in her dark little library one night and have the most evil idea imaginable pop into her head…

She would write up a new doctrine for the Ninth then and there, explaining how the haircut is a parallel to the distant pinprick of light offered by Dominicus amidst a vast sea of darkness devoid of their gracious Emperor’s undying radiance.

A muster would then be called. Gideon would be dragged out of her cell by a freshly skull-capped Aiglamene (odd, but you’re never too old to rock a butch buzz-cut right?) to be plopped onto a pew amidst of sea of skeletons (with no hair), a dwindling handful of ancient nuns (also with no hair), Ortus (again, no hair), Crux (get the picture?), and Harrow’s parents (who due to being MEGAdead, always have their hoods up).

At this point, Gideon’s head is a single fiery beacon amidst an unchanged congregation of geriatrics and their token 30s-something poet.

So when Harrow steps out of the shadows and gets “permission” from her parents to read out a parchment “previously thought lost within the bowels of the Anastasian,” It becomes immediately apparent to a newly horrified Gideon that this will only really apply to her. Harrow won’t give a rat’s ass about her own hair because as Gideon knows, all she cares about is that damned tomb. And bones.

As Gideon stands to flip harrow the bird, a quartet of skeletons pin her back down to the pew and a mechanical buzzing noise suddenly echos through the rafters of Drearburh. 😈

Gideon, shouting and struggling, is dragged over by figures in Ninth House robes towards Harrow, who brandishes a pair of clippers
Gideon and Harrow stand with tonsures. Gideon covers her face, embarrassed of her monk ass haircut.

Cannot for the life of me find the post, however, someone had the idea of the ninth house with tonsures and it was so funny I had to draw it

While I love and personally feel very seen by the allegorical* butch transfem/gnc/non-passing rep we get from Pyrrha, the circumstances that lead to her current gender situation somewhat muddy the waters on this imho….

Functionally*, Pyrrha becomes a butch trans woman who works dig-sites to feed her found family. This is entirely due to G1deon dying to Varun and leaving her behind in his body though, so whether this is her preferred presentation can’t really be called here.

Before lyctoral consumption, Pyrrha was head of intelligence for the Cohort, and a cop long before that. She’s great with guns and swords, and falls for people capable of burning empires down single-handedly. Classic femme fatale shit historically, but slightly gender-fucky given the cavalier dynamic.

On the other hand again, she calls her family “daddy’s treasures” after coming home late one night, and leaves her/G1deon’s hair cropped. 🤷

So in short.. Pyrrha is a woman who died alongside her nerdy polycule in a nuclear apocalypse, got resurrected as the bodyguard of her best friend, got killed again and magically consumed by said best friend, spent the next 10,000 years give or take intermittently regaining consciousness in his body after having part of her soul eaten away, and now lives in his body full time while undercover in an active war-zone. Anyone got a niche gender label and pride flag for that?

….

*While I wouldn’t want someone in these books to just say “Hi! I’m trans and go by -/-” as this would clash with the subtler baked-in queerness of the post-resurrection world building, there are other ways to write explicitly trans characters that don’t require the plot hoops that Pyrrha had to be thrown through in order to be classified as representation.

my daily mental exercise is trying to determine where pyrrha falls on the butch-femme scale

My comrades and I got threatened by a pack of neo-nazis at a benefits show we were hosting for our new local Food-not-Bombs chapter in SC last night.

Nobody got hurt and the show was a huge success after we got them to fuck off, but it really put things into perspective for me regarding my transitioning body and physical wellness/performance. I work a physically demanding warehouse job, but the workload is just inconsistent enough where unfortunately I’m not getting much out of it unless we’re super busy. Currently I’m just a wiry bundle of sticks with A-cups and mediocre upper-body strength (on a good day 😅).

I think it’s high-time I properly break the glass on my Vi/Gideon Nav/Scorpia/Zarya transition goals. Gonna look up how to min-max my vegetarian diet and find a queer-friendly workout center in my area.

I suppose a hefty DIY belt chain would do me some good too…. 😈 Stay safe out there y’all. It’s only gonna get worse before it gets better.

so like this will be rambly but oh well.

i’ve only been on hormones for almost 2 years and i have some Things to Say.

Transfems you need to eat and you should workout in general but especially strength training. You’re going through puberty so you need a ton of fuel, also the fat redistribution that will give you feminine features comes from incoming fat, don’t expect your existing fat to just migrate on its own.

as for working out, it will make you feel better i promise. It also is important to focus on functional fitness so when youre old you can squat to pick things up with ease, or farmer-carry the heavy groceries, or help lift friends off the ground when theyre injured. Working out is your way to say “fuck you world, i’m trans and i will survive and even when i’m old i won’t go down easy”

I know the dolls are underrepresented in fitness spaces, so it can be intimidating, but fitness is for everyone and you may able to be positive exposure to trans people for those who otherwise might not see people like us day to day, and that makes them think of you as part of their community.

I also want to point out that I worked out before transitioning, i wasnt super strong or anything but i lost nearly all of my upper body strength after my T dropped, I STILL cannot reach some of my old PRs for certain movements. I’m not trying to paint women and AFAB people as inherently weak (there were tons of cis women way stronger than me even when i wasnt on E), but when your body shifts from relying on testosterone to estrogen you lose a ton of energy and a ton of strength. Working on building and maintaining strength is nothing but beneficial in every facet of your life.

(this may be a good time to point out if youre scared of being bulky and muscly: dont be. its very difficult to get that physique and you have to be actively working or planning for it 24/7)

All this to say that I’ve seen so many scrawny transfems wondering why they dont see many physical effects from their transition while they under eat and dont train. Fuel, Fat, and Muscle will give you the results, the hormones are just blueprints to tell your body what to do with those things (among other things).

Another thing for the American transfems, with the next minimum 4 years looking very bleak: a strong doll can fight back.
