The cool wind on Samhain reminds us of the coming darkness as it shifts the fallen leaves. Wind magic is amazing to do during this time of year. Do a ceremony asking the shifting winds to not only take away the negative thoughts and feeling from the past year but ask them to also bring you new positive things. Make an offering to the air element using fallen leaves. Or simply just take time to appreciate the wind.

🔔 BELLS IN WITCHCRAFT 🔔

Bells might just be the earliest form of superstitious practise that I remember. My baba attached three sakura-patterned suzu bells on my schoolbag as a kid, purportedly for good luck and protection from evil spirits – and Japan is far from the only place to have associated bells and bellringing with mystic practise. They’ve been used worldwide to ward off evil and carry messages – and in a more metaphysical sense, sound is the movement of energy through substance. Sounds have the potential to work powerful magic.

Here are some of the ways I’ve found utilising bells to be helpful to my craft. While I’m more likely to use traditional suzu type bells, your own background, path and culture will likely have its own types of bells – and as ever, bells can be ornate antiques or they can be a bottle cap in a tin can, as long as they’re used with intent.

GETTING STARTED

🔔 As with so much of the craft, if you’re new to the witching bell, it’s a matter of exploration and experimentation. Get a “feel” for what works for you and the specific bell you’re using.

🔔 It’s good practise to ensure that the bell itself is cleansed, warded and protected – you don’t want anything nasty tapping into that power. All witching tools can do as much harm as good, intentional or accidental.

🔔 A good way to begin incorporating bells into your craft is infuse them into any typical ritual that you’re comfortable with, or even just a prayer or moment of contemplation at your altar if you have one.

🔔 Give the bell a soft ring while focusing on the energy it’ll ripple and move, try to track the movements it creates and what it touches. The tone it’s sending out.  The most primal and versatile use of the bell – and what many of the below come down to – is simply another manner of physically channelling energy, giving it shape and direction.

PROTECTION

🔔 “Passive” bells such as windchimes or small bells attached to belongings you don’t want disturbed are a starting point. They will scare off some forms of spirit all by themselves, especially if appropriately blessed, charmed or enchanted. Or cursed.

🔔 Gently tolling can draw energy into a ward or circle you are forming and enforce its protective properties, or for a simple cleanse, letting the sound travel to every corner of the area you are protecting. It’s a little more “cutting” than a smoke or incense cleansing, which I view as more “gentle” forms of cleansing. Both have their uses.

🔔 Harder tolling is, in my opinion, one of the most powerful ways in which to enforce a banishing – however, it’s best to you know what you’re doing with the bell before you go bashing it about.

DISCERNMENT

🔔 Bells can have quite the effect on your perception and awareness. Ringing and then stopping, listening to the silence left in its wake, can bring you new perceptions or make things you’d previously missed obvious. Let it attune your mind and senses to something new, whether that’s in your thoughts or something with a little more presence. Visualise travelling with the sound, taking heed of the energies it touches and disturbs. Take note of the echoes – you’ll learn what they mean with experience.

🔔 A set of windchimes can let you know if something is passing through or if there’s some unusual energy afoot – and, yes, it may also just be letting you know that it’s a particularly breezy day, but that’s witchcraft for you.

CONJURING

🔔 This can be as simple as calling good energies to witching tools, spell jars, tarot decks, crystals, altars and shrines, your favourite teddy bar, anything at all.

🔔 With spirit work, it can truly help to magnify your “calling”. This can range from gently bringing your latest offering to the attention of your friendly neighbourhood house spirit – all the way to trying to catch the attention of something more. Be mindful, however. As I said, I consider bells pretty powerful tools and a call that’s too loud is not good spirit work practise for the spirit worker’s own sake. It can really help coax something out of hiding if you’re gentle with it, though.

COMMUNING

🔔 Some use bells to mark the beginning and end of a ritual, and I’ve read that in Wiccan practise an altar bell can be used to invoke the Goddess, although as a non-Wiccan, I’ll welcome corrections on that if I’m wrong.

🔔 In my experience, very simple forms of communication via bell work a lot better than anything too complex – “come here” and “stay away” have already been covered, and other than that they can serve as greetings or signals of a start or end of some practise or ritual, the opening or closing of a door, etc.

🔔 They can also serve as a warning or a litmus test regarding spirits, a signalling of your presence and awareness, lack of fear, or willingness to defend – but be prepared to deal with whatever responses these garner.

BINDING

🔔 Bindings are where you most often see that famous (clockwise) circular motion of the bell, embodying the meaning of the spell. This can be a simple binding to seal a spell or charm or enchantment, or a spirit-binding.

🔔 Personally, spirit-binding is something I do as little as possible simply due to my beliefs holding the autonomy of spirits in very high regard. However, sometimes situations arise that call for it, and I’m aware that not all bindings are unwilling. Far from it – and some spirits are dangerous when unbound.

🔔 As an animist (believing that all things, including inanimate objects, contain a spirit of their own), I consider gently nudging a spirit back into its physical form a sort of semi-binding, and that can be useful.

I’ll leave you all with a note that I am an urban apartment-dwelling witch through and through, so I understand that we can’t all be jangling away at all hours. I myself have a glass windchime in my front window that makes a distinct but muted sound when disturbed by passers-through, and highly recommend wooden ones also. I also only use my small and relatively quiet suzu bell for my crafting – one given to me by my baba herself.

Venus rx in Scorpio - ♡🖤 October 5 - November 16, 2018

the venus rx cycle opens the door for resolving the residue of past issues that cause conflict and misunderstandings in the present. in scorpio, it means a curse and a curative on persephone’s heart, freezing her in the autumn where she can still see the flowers of life but cannot touch them.  the heart becomes encased when venus retrogrades. we may become less responsive and seemingly distanced to the behaviours and actions of our partners, which may seem alarming or like we have ‘switched off’  but this process provides the insight of a clear and delicate view of the person and the entire relationship - free from the distortion of our emotional reactions, projections, immediate judgements, and confusion. we become more aware of the responsibility we singularly have in our relationships and in the lives of the people around us, these are people who respect and regard us so highly that they have chosen us to share their lives with. from this perspective, we can certainly approach our relationships with a refined honour and the dignity they deserve. 

in simple terms the retrograding planet is just returning to the path already crossed and doing it again. from this backward step we can see the beauty of people from a light and reflection we have never seen before, or simply forgotten existed in them. sometimes in the heat and chaos of the moment we move on without resolving or receiving any validation, and the poison starts to weep from places unknown within us and manifesting in the presence of this person sometimes we need to return over the past pain to recover it and let it spill out from us completely so we can really move forward, truthfully and authentically. because venus is in scorpio, we have no real need to worry about the false promises of our ideals and fantasies. whatever path is taken - leaving relationships, remaining in a strengthened one or developing greater relationship with the inner self and the sight for beauty unseen, or returning to a past relationship  you can rest assured that each should be met with peace, and no decision made could be wrong

Samhain begins the witches’ new year, and now Winter soon is here; the leaves fall, the harvest is done, so call your ancestors and let’s have some fun. 

Yule is the longest night, and signals the return of light. Everything is newly remade, and we wait for darkness to fade.

Imbolc we clean, cleanse and prepare for what the Spring may come to bear. Light the candles, light the fire, and build in yourself what does inspire. 

Ostara comes and Spring growth arrives, and all the Earth is truly alive. Winter is over and in it’s stead we bless our homes and our covensteads. 

Beltane, the fine May eve, we thank our gods for fertility. Bless the growing harvest and romance as we eat, drink, sing, and dance.

Litha is the longest day, the sun at it’s brightest but soon will fade. The Earth’s bounty is at it’s top, and abundance aids our spells nonstop. 

Lughnasadh, Lammas, both names are fine, herald the advent of harvest time. When fear and uncertainty are about, we ward our homes and both in and out. 

Mabon is a balance of seasons, where darkness and light remain within reason. The last harvest is called and the Summer is done, we give our thanks and farewell the sun. 

As every cycle begins once again, the wheel spins ‘round and we greet grandly Samhain.

libra makes a lot of comparisons with other people, they often idealise those who express the qualities they don’t have and rely on this person to fulfil or act out them out on their behalf. they can wrongly believe that they cannot source their own sense of ‘wellbeing’, ‘security’, ‘happiness’ or whatever unless they are in the company of this person, when these belong to libra in the first place capricorns have a long list of successes that they diminish in comparison to everything they ‘have not achieved’, they can have trouble self-reflecting without self-judgement and fail to see the progress they are making because the end goal is so tremendous and the person they need to become to reach this is seemingly so far away

your partner! this is a big one here as venus is the planet of relationships, particularly romantic and sensual ones. make sure you’re ready for all issues to surface and be resolved.

your finances! venus is also the planet of material wealth. this isn’t a time to fool around with your money. be more frugal and know the worth of what you’re buying and selling.

your diet! venus is indulgence and she loves her sweets. keep a look out to what you’re putting into your body as it’s really important here for natives for potential glandular issues.

business dealings! venus isn’t just romantic relationships, it’s all partnerships, so make sure if you have a business partner, that you’re ready for any issues to arise.

art and music! this is a good time for artists to really look back and refine their sense of style, be cautious of new things in this area, and if you’re an artist, be careful for any issues that may arise concerning your art.

This week (and every day) a lot of pain has been surfacing for survivors and resistors. There is heartbreak in the fact that with the way things are set up, we are all trained to hate women/femmes/gender non conforming folx and not be surprised when they are hurt, traumatized, and/or killed. Take the space that you need to recover from the weight of this. You might also be processing the fact that the men/masc ppl in your life haven’t shown up for you in this life, that they still have so much to learn and still do that learning at your expense. It is ok to be angered by this. It is ok to live into the fullness of whatever emotions surface for you, now. You are allowed to feel big, cry big. Remember that you are far more powerful than any person who comes for your dignity. Remember your self-knowledge, the fact that you have survived your whole life until this point. Remember all that you have striven for and worked towards in your healing process, whatever that looks like for you. Celebrate, my loves, because an opportunity to make real change is possible. Where do you fit in the change process ? What is your place in the revolution ? Where do you find your work ? Maybe it’s in direct service, in healing work, in planning, in organizing, in balancing budgets, in waking up each day so that you can continue to support others. Wherever your work is, know that there is a lot of potential for success. Together, we can move into the next way, the next moment. Into a time when ppl arent afraid to walk on the street or wear a piece of clothing or have a conversation in fear of pain and death. This is a time to mourn. To feel. So that we can move forward with the lessons from that mourning. Don’t ever let someone tell you what it looks like for you to grieve. Do what works for you, live into the whole self. With what you have to offer, we can start building stronger communities. autumn is a time of melancholy and sadness so here are some helpful self care tips that will surely make you feel better!

- make yourself a big cup of your favourite tea and drink it steaming hot

- generally drink really hot beverages and hope the pain from your burnt tongue silences the existential one

- go out for a walk and get lost in the fog

Virgo Sun: The ego can easily be neglected and abused by the desire for perfection. They are critical towards self or are overly humble. Ego can be fed with accepting appreciation and accepting flaws in themselves and others.

Libra Sun: The ego along with individuality can be lost in a desire to adapt or please others. Ego revolves around acceptance and love. Ego is strengthened by self-love and acceptance.
