just, who DOESN’T love one (1) dysfunctional family.
So if the monocle shows what people truly are does that mean that Reggie 100% knew how traumatized and miserable the siblings were and kept being horrible to them anyways? I figured he had a vague idea, but the idea that he really had it laid out this clearly to him and didn’t change his actions is kind of jarring
That’s a good point I didn’t even think that
Goddamn that’s so bad! That’s so angsty.

tua headcanon (horror movies night):
luther would definitely be the type to let his siblings hide their faces in his arms whenever they get scared. he’d also be kind enough to sit in the middle and hold the popcorn bowl for everyone because he’s the only one who can get through a movie without yeeting it fifty feet into the air (like klaus)
diego sits on the floor, casually flipping his knives the entire time, the only indication that he ever gets scared being the way he does it faster and faster. and it’s sort of an unspoken rule, but whoever’s sitting behind him gets to be diego’s unofficial pillow for the night. he especially likes it when it’s allison because she has a habit of carding her fingers through his hair, and he’s fallen asleep with his head in her lap on more than one occasion
allison is always in charge of snacks and drinks because she makes a mean margarita and she’s the only one in this household who actually knows how to cook something that isn’t spam or bacon or eggs or instant ramen
the ghosts in horror movies don’t actually scare klaus; c'mon, the man has seen way worse shit than that. it’s just that some of them look too much like the ones he sees in real life, and so he has a hard time disassociating afterwards. still: that little boy from the grudge never fails to freak him out, and whenever he’s on screen, klaus throws popcorn at the tv until he disappears
five doesn’t really care for horror movies but he does appreciate his siblings’ efforts to bond, and so he sits with them for the hour or two it takes to finish a movie with next to no complaint. sometimes, he falls asleep only twenty minutes in, and has to endure all the teasing about being an old man when he wakes. when he does make it through an entire film, it’s only because he’s busy pointing out continuity errors or how ridiculous the other effects are
ben sits with them, but doesn’t really engage; he’s too busy reading for that. it’s also pretty uncomfortable for him to watch movies about dead things and monsters under beds when he finds out that in another timeline, he was dead for 17 years before he managed to move on. besides, he gets more scared from the sound of allison, klaus, and vanya screaming than the actual movie anyway
once, they decide to watch a lovecraftian horror film, and ben thinks it’d be funny to release a few tentacles and sneak up on everyone from behind. the result is one wasted bowl of popcorn, a knife missing his ear by a few inches, vanya shattering at least three vases, and klaus’ incessant screeching about “you could’ve killed me, ben! do you want me to follow you around for the rest of your life? no? yeah, didn’t think so!” but hey: it’s the best prank he’s ever played, and it’s just so, so worth it
vanya tries to pretend like she isn’t scared, but she actually is. horror movies had never been her thing, even when they were young. but klaus’ running commentary is actually pretty funny and allison sometimes tells juicy stories about the actors, especially the ones she’s worked with in the past, and so vanya stays. besides it’s nice to curl into luther’s side and feel him jump a bit whenever somebody on screen gets murdered, and it’s even nicer to laugh at him afterwards when he tries to pass it off as being “cold”
afterwards, they retreat to their respective rooms. but in the middle of the night, allison hears her door creak open and in creeps klaus, tugging ben by his sleeve with vanya not too far behind. after a while, luther comes as well, half-dragging a protesting diego behind him
they’re in the middle of making an awesome fort when five teleports in, carrying a box of griddy’s donuts and a carton of milk to wash it all down. for some reason, they’ve always just known when the others are in need of sweets, and tonight is no exception
while they eat, they share stories about their childhood and although it has the potential to turn sad really quick, it also helps them grow closer when they realize just how much they have in common, even after all these years. saving the world thrice from an apocalypse does that to a family, i guess
five is the last to fall asleep so it’s his duty to turn the lights off, but before he does, he takes a minute to take in his sleeping siblings’ faces: of ben–still slightly distant but slowly accepting that this is where he belongs–curled against allison, who has always thrown off heat like a furnace; vanya burrowed under three comforters because even as an adult, she still gets cold at the drop of a hat; klaus’ head resting on luther’s chest; diego face-down into a pillow, his hand stretched out towards the space they’ve all reserved for five, searching for his brother even in sleep
and in that moment, five just feels so much love for them swell up in his chest that all other worries fly out of his head because what else could matter when his family is here and safe and together again? so five flicks off the switch, lies down, and lets diego mash his face into his shoulder because even if he wakes up all drooled-on tomorrow, there’s still no place he’d rather be

Will I ever shut up about TUA? Probably, but not today, because I’ve been thinking a lot about Five and Ben and how their stories parallel each other and I am emotional.
It’s so interesting to me, the common things that they share - they both were probably the closest/most supportive to Vanya, and both of them “left” the family in a sense. Five’s disappearance fractured the family, and Ben’s death cause it to completely break apart. They both have an interesting arc of isolation, wanting their siblings back, and being “stuck” down to the point that they’re literally stuck in the clothes that they were wearing when they disappeared from their families.
Let’s start with Five - I was surprised, at first, that he seemed calm in his talk with Reginald. That he said he gave Reginald a hard time, instead of putting blame on Reginald. Because sure, yeah, Five is a little shit but Reginald is literally an abusive parent, why would Five, who’s arguably smart and seemed to not care about Reginald’s death in the first place, say that he was the problem? And then I thought about it and honestly - it make sense. We’ve seen an episode on Five’s life, the isolation that he felt and how badly he wanted to see his siblings again. And well, I guess he did see his siblings but their bodies, a reminder that they were in danger somewhere back in time and that he couldn’t get to them. Five is left alone with his thoughts and bodies of people he couldn’t save, and like he tells Diego, all he hears is Reginald’s voice, every day, saying “I told you so.” He has the proof that Reginald is right, he goes back and narrowly avoids it only to immediately see yet another future where his siblings die, and he’s constantly trying to go above and beyond to save his siblings.
We even see it in his scene with Vanya - when she asks him who started the apocalypse, Five hesitates and says an asteroid, because he doesn’t want to hurt her, as blunt and detached as he’s seemed this whole series. Five probably doesn’t even really blame her, but himself. He’s convinced himself that he needs to be the one who saves his family, he goes at a lot of things alone and without their knowledge, he tries this because his isolation led him to believe that yes, Reginald was right and Five was wrong. Maybe if hadn’t been stubborn as a kid this wouldn’t have happened, maybe if he had practiced instead of being overeager they wouldn’t be in this situation. It strikes me that Five is in his same clothes, something we joke about, but Five keeps himself in this by choice. It’s a reminder of when he left, when he realized he’d made a mistake, a symbol of what happened and a reminder that he needs to save his family no matter what.
And now looking at Ben. Ben has Klaus, yes, but we see, especially in season 2, how much Ben struggles with isolation. He only has Klaus, and as much as I love him, Klaus straight up denies Ben the autonomy to interact with other humans based off of pettiness. Ben has been a passive observer for 17 years, he’s stuck in his clothes because he literally cannot change them. But you know what else? We don’t see a whole lot on Ben outside of Klaus, but we get a good glimpse on how life (or well, the afterlife) is for him when all the siblings are together. When they leave and we see Ben say, “I missed you all. So much.” He’s there, seeing everything that they do, trying to be there but unable to, and he loves them, he knows them, he understands them. Ben is the least “resentful” sibling outside of his occasional resentment towards Klaus - he wants to see his siblings succeed and be okay, and I think it’s an important look on how he lived as a ghost while they were all in the house, because they all didn’t leave right away.
In the house? Sure he’s stuck to Klaus, but he could still see his other siblings, see how they were doing and coping. Reginald did a great job of turning the kids against each other and making them feel alone in their trauma, but Ben as a ghost got to see that Vanya was being drugged and isolated, that Luther and Allison felt like they only had each other, that Klaus needed to dope himself up to not feel the pain, he saw everything the siblings were going through and how Reginald was treating them, and you know what his conclusion was? What he said to Vanya - that Reginald was afraid of her, drugged her, made her suppress her emotions, and that was messed up. He lets her know, Vanya is surprised to hear it and probably never even realized that it was messed up, but Ben lets her know. He’s recognized that Reginald is an abusive father but that it is not their fault and that they are not the monsters because of Reginald’s bad parenting. Ben has had this time to think about who’s at fault and it wasn’t him, it wasn’t Five, it wasn’t Vanya, they were all children, it was the grown man who was supposed to be a father.
It’s just so amazing to see and I don’t know if they’re intentionally contrasted but I think it’s so cool and heartbreaking to see how these two had to deal with isolation and came to different conclusions on their father, yes, but also came back with so much love and care for their siblings even if they express it differently.

the umbrella academy + emo kylo ren tweets (part 1 here)
The Basics: Who are they?
The Sparrow Academy is another version of the Umbrella Academy. They are another group created by Reginald Hargreeves, or The Monocle in the comics, to help save the world. In the comics, they are top-secret, and exist at the same time as the Umbrella Academy. They recruit Vanya in the comics to be part of their team. Grace, or Mother in the comics, is in charge of them. In the show, it seems to be implied that they overwrite the Umbrella Academy, and are the only superhero group.
2. Their powers
Here are some of their powers in use at the end of Hotel Oblivion:
- Turn into sparrows
- Voodoo (Attack self, others take damage)
- Super strength
- Eye beam
- The cube guy?
- Rumor power
The other powers are unknown.
3. What happens next?
Lester, who is supposedly with the United States government, is tired of all these superheroes and villains nearly destroying the world. He is going to do something to regulate it. We don’t know yet, but I have a feeling it will have Captain America: Civil War vibes.
I hope this answered some questions you all have! Feel free to send some asks!
The things the Hargreeves each say to Vanya in the brain eating scene match up perfectly with how they see themselves/who they are.
Klaus accuses her of faking it, when we see a performance from him for the entirety of the show. He fakes almost everything the family sees from him.
Luther accuses her of not trying hard enough, and we know that Luther thinks he wasn't a good enough Number One. He pins this on himself completely.
Allison accuses her of using her powers too much and not being able to handle the consequences. This TOTALLY follows with her s1 plotline and her decision to use and use of her powers in s2.
Ben says that she isn't ready and it isn't her fault. This is how Ben views his death, we know from s1.
Diego and Five don't say anything because they don't REALLY know themselves at all. These two have declined getting to know themselves in favor of dedicating themselves to saving others. Diego literally says he doesn't have daddy issues. Diego. And Five does not know who he is without an apocalypse, or what to do with himself when it's over.
I think this is interesting. I dunno. I don't think any of these people (except Ben) ACTUALLY feel this way about Vanya. It's an analysis on them, done by Vanya in Vanya's head, but because Vanya is the way she is, it gets directed at her.
can you imagine living in 1963 Dallas and you're just minding your own business, probably on the way to do errands when you find the largest human being you've ever seen in your entire life being yelled at by a child in a fancy school uniform, and said child just blurts out I'M THE DADDY HERE with all the conviction in his tiny body, and later on, just when you think things can't get any weirder, you find out on the news that the man is a suspected terrorist/kidnapper/killer with four other accomplices and the child is apparently their hostage, i mean really what a wILD DAY
No one:
Five:
If the siblings’ season 3 alternate selves don’t have their actors’ accents imma be so mad.
Let Klaus be Irish and Luther be British. It’d be so funny.
Like a Derry Girls remake with just the two of them for the entire season.
Allison: so yeah basically I have super powers and was adopted in the year 1989- oh did I mention I was from the future? And I kind of ended the world, well actually it was my sister- yes I have a sister-
