when i say i’m from ukraine, people assume i live somewhere else now. when i say i live in ukraine, they assume i’m somehow immune to war, and there’s a logical division between a ukrainian they chat with on discord and a ukrainian on the news. bitches my yaoi is written from the bomb shelter
I’ve had this idea for a while now, and finally got myself to somehow implement it into life
"In essence, 2p Ukraine personifies Ukrainian resistance, if you wish – hence the red-black flag, otherwise known as the revolutionary flag; or what happens when blood spilled fighting for her freedom spills onto the regular flag, whereas 1p represents the country as a whole"
she is more cautious, more serious and mistrustful; more of a cold tactical thinker, and oh boy she does not forgive that easily. amongst her distinct features would be a singular earring in her ear, darker hair+eyes, more angular and leaner face, thinner eyebrows and a slight hump on her nose. She occasionally draws an embroidery pattern on her cheek as a part of her make-up (could be seen on the yellow-scarf mini version)
zoom in for detail+notes; there is a lot to unpack about this character I swear.
"russians dni" is one of the coolest things ukrainians invented because somehow it's not even a spell against russians it's a spell against the idiots offended on their behalf because how can you possibly follow someone whose friend was torn apart by russian missile or whatever if they're mean
yk i love this specific Romano that lives in my head rent free + his broad emotional spectrum
yes, am pathetic enough to post old sketches but i like this one. brainwashing you into thinking I can draw emotions: thats not true🫵🏼
fr lol
Imagine hating someone just for the fact of their existence that even random pics on the internet drives you mad.
But of course you don't think about it when you repost russians. They are so harmless little uwus who just wanna play in the sandbox too aww 🥺
I'm tired of banning ya'll. If you are russian, just delete yourself from my blog. I don't wanna play friends and idc what your intentions are. It's so damn hilarious to see how you like my posts on neutral topics and prefer to ignore posts where I speak about the war which your country started.
We don't care if you support us, like our blogs/art/culture etc. If you are russian, please
…according to which, Romano agreed he’d help kick Austria’s ass, and Prussia guaranteed he’d not back off from the war until Veneciano’s reunited with the rest of Italy.
Now, why Romano, you may ask, if the Risorgimento was initiated more so by the North? Well, in my interpritation, it all started with Sardinia/Piedmont-Sardinia/Savoy, (a separate OC because she deserves it), whilst Romano joined her in 1861, – who had been the Kingdom of Two Sicilies under the Bourbon rule prior, his people voting 98,5% to join. Thus, the Kingdom of Italy was proclaimed in 1861; with Venice still living under Austria’s rule up until 1866.
And it was mailnly upon Romano to be the Kingdom of Italy in the next 5 years. Not that he had ever wanted it.
[As you may have noticed, I got into PruMano and Risorgimento simultaneously, god forbid. And I’m trying not to trail off, but I’ve got a detailed version of the events’ interpretation in my head – what happened to Sardinia? why is it Romano and Veneciano, out of all, specifically, that came to be modern Italy? What about the Papal States? — but more on all that to come🫢]
The last thing I’ll add, is that though I tried to make their uniforms nerdy af accurate, basing Romano’s off Sicilian Regiments’ Chivalry and Prussia’s off high-ranking Prussian commandment on general, this is still a silly anime bois fanart first and foremost lol. Take nothing seriously
haha so real
Prussia's handwriting is illegible by today's standards. He writes in a mashed up mess of Sütterlin, Kurrent, and nerve-damaged muscle weakness. (Examples under the cut)
Sütterlin (1924 - 1941 in Germany) Example:
Kurrentschrift (12th/13th century until the mid of the 20th century):
Chernenko - added a translator. Himaruya didn't say anything about Ukraine's last name
So, I revisited the wiki page and the link to Himaruya’s post regarding this; and you’re right. I wonder why did that surname appear in her wiki at the first place. Thanks though, I’ll correct my old posts
To be honest, kinda feels like the pic below, NOW I CAN COME UP WITH ANY SURNAME I LIKE FOR HER, FREEDOOOOOM
GUYS. THIS. IT MAY LOOK LONG, BUT PLEASE. READ. THIS.
hi, so im kind of wondering what is your thoughts with hetalia especially the fact that it hasnt age well and specifically what do you think of the way hetalia Ukraine's character is handled
oh that's a great question, thank you! oh i sure have a lot of things to say but it'll be difficult to make it concise and readable
early hetalia certainly has aged like milk, the idea of making axis powers the main characters Did Not Spark Joy. it seems that himaruya made an effort to distance hetalia from that since then, there was this whole rebranding from "axis powers hetalia" to "hetalia world stars" and the comics no longer touch on ww2 but rather modern day, sometimes history, some fun facts, and sometimes have no basis whatsoever. it's hard to judge the intentions behind that. sure it has ironed some of the problems but general inaccuracy and disrespectful portrayal of countries remains an issue. and personally i just find himaruya's writing bad and unfunny.
and now for ukraine. oh dear.
to start off easy, a short note on her appearance - as a ukrainian, it's a bit weird to see her blonde and blue eyed? the beauty standard here for centuries has been "black hair brown eyes" and it's seen in folk songs, poems and novels. and yet it's not just hetalia that does that. it's not a mistake really, i'm just weirded out, especially after how western far-right and far-left has been explaining support for ukraine as "because ukrainians are blonde and blue-eyed".
but onto her most prominent visual trait, let's talk about boobs. in hetalia collezione from 2021 (i think?), on ukraine's character profile himaruya has written that he was inspired by naked female protesters upon creating her.
the "naked protesters" are femen, a radical feminist activist group famous for topless protests. it's a group of like, 15 people. they were last prominent in 2013. i think most ukrainians barely even remember them. it's fucking wild to me that he based an entire country personification off of that. it is, however, quite telling of him that himaruya saw feminist protesters and only saw potential for cheap jokes about boobs.
i chose a good screenshot, it shows some other problems as well - "crybaby", "poor" and "she loves russia chan". i'll save the latter for last. let's focus on her being a crybaby and poor. "but actually very strong!", himaruya says, except i can't recall any examples in canon where ukraine has been shown as strong. instead her whole personality and appearance reeks of 2000s perception of eastern europe, influenced by both western and russian chauvinism to show them as inferior. ukrainian women have been stereotyped like hetalia ukraine - poor, huge tits, weak in a "traditionally feminine" way, whores. it was disgusting back then, it's even more disgusting that in 20 years himaruya didn't bother to revisit that at all.
politically speaking, these jokes, about ukraine being poor and weak and dependent on russia, while have some basis in the reality of 1990-2000s ukraine, are very insensitive to the causes of these issues and just feel like punching down.
and now, "she's loves russia chan". lol. lmao even. in 2021 no less. it has been another consistent trait of hers, as shown on the screenshot above that she just wants to get along with her "siblings" russia and belarus. to talk to russia "like i used to". there's this sense that they somehow grew distant, and all of them regret it, but it's never shown what happened.
what it really reminds me of is the russian narrative "big bad evil politicians (and/or big bad evil west) want to divide our brotherly nations, the people just want to live in peace but have no say in it" and shit like that. it's not the case. what happened is the russian state trying to tie ukraine in its sphere of influence, using economic blackmail to influence its political decisions, and then punishing ukraine with occupation of crimea and parts of donetsk and luhansk regions for choosing eu over russia. even before that, but especially after 2014, the amount of chauvinism russian media and russian people has shown has been enormous. i grew up in an environment dominated by russian media showing how ukrainians were nothing more but dumber, poorer rural russians. since 2014 they also started calling us nazis, child eaters, ukrainian identity - fake and made up by austro-hungarian empire, ukrainian lands - gifts of lenin, and so on. i will stress again - not just russian media. but russian people. even the supposed "liberal opposition".
but yeah sure, we're brotherly nations. nothing but love between ukraine and russia. ironically, the last appearance of ukraine in hetalia comics as of now is a comic from late 2021 about how much ukraine loves russia. since then it seems himaruya has been too much of a coward to draw her again. thank fuck, really.
and fandom is no fucking better by the way. whenever i go into hws ukraine tag it's still half full of fanart of "soviet siblings" (the fucking audacity to use that name too), showcasing that "brotherly love" between ukraine and two aggressor states towards it.
but y'know, a lot of people in this fandom will claim that it's apolitical, that these are just characters. so, a few questions:
if it's apolitical, why does hetalia cover political events, like brexit?
is a country not a political entity? is a nation not a political entity?
is the genre of satire not political?
if these are just characters, why call them country names? why not just make them your human ocs? why tie their lives to historical and political events?
it just doesn't make sense to me. "it's not political" is an incredibly flimsy excuse. everything that has to do with portrayal of countries and cultures is inherently political. and if you want to be a decent person, there's a responsibility to portray these nations and cultures respectfully: do your research, talk to people from these countries, otherwise you're building with no foundation. it's not even hetalia-specific advice, this applies to writing any character from countries different to your own.
this was. very long. can't think of how to shorten it nor i really want to, i tried to answer this as fully as i could.
there's not much point in explaining all that to people who after 2 (10) years still don't get what the problem is. i expect this post only to get attention from people who already agree with it, and mostly ukrainians. but eh, maybe a miracle will happen and someone from outside my bubble would read it.
you said your opinion on russia, belarus, and ukraine being related, but what would you think about just belarus and ukraine being sisters?
ehhh…
First of all, I’m really confused by the entire sibling/families thing in Hetalia. It’s complicated as hell, so I prefer none of them being siblings by blood, and those who are close in that way becoming siblings in spirit if they want too
I mentioned this already briefly (unless you know me on Discord. then not briefly, haha), but I’ve got a vision how different principalities of the medieval feudal union of tribes/city states, Ruthenia/Kyivan Rus, evolved, which I’ll elaborate one day if you’re interested✋🏼
As for those two:
– Principality of Kyiv – became Ukraine
– Principality of Polatsk – became Belarus
Kyiv and Polatsk grew up together as friends-rivals-frenemies occasionally allying and infighting depending on the situation. They joined Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth together. They rebelled together (although still fought for power a bit amidst the uprising), and fell under russian rule together. They had their independence movements, cultural revival, although it’s sad how the Beloruthian one is barely talked of. And finally, Beloruthian language it the closest related to Ukrainian.
They share much more than appears. So, whether they would want to consider themselves sisters in spirit nowardays?
Heh. Mayhaps
It is another headcanon, but occasionally, Belarus snaps, wakes up from how she usually acts, and just stares to the front: "what am I even doing?"
And then Ivan hits her on a head with somethin' and she goes back to 'normal'
have you talked about why her last name is chernenko? id love to hear about it!
[upd: it turned out that Himaruya never listed a name for her in the original post, just in the wiki; so this post is kinda irrelevant]
That’s a good question, I’ve got no idea tbh🎉
I know Himaruya listed this as a surname he liked for Ukraine; and etymologically, surnames ending in –enko are typical for the country (I’ve got one lol)
One theory states that this surname specifically comes from the old-Ukrainian word for "black", "черний/chernyi", which evolved into modern-Ukrainian "чорний/chornyi". That’s why I am contemplating between Chernenko and Chornenko for her
It also might be a reference to one of the ex-soviet leaders who had the surname Chernenko and I REALLY HOPE it isn’t he wasn’t even Ukrainian ew wtf (😭😭)
man I wish there’s canon Ukraine development that makes her much independent
I do love the headcanons please keep on coming
I'd rather see Ukrainian fans write her than hima's attempts, he doesn't seem very interested or passionate about developing his characters besides the main 8
The only instance of Ukraine being Ukrainian in hetalia I've seen is the chibi artwork where she has the painted pysanka eggs next to her
I make edits with official art for fun where she's Ukrainian though :D
HEHEHEHEHE NOT TO MENTION I LOST IT READING THE LETTER ITSELF
turkraine to me is the (sadly fake) letter the zaporozhian cossacks sent the sultan mehmet iv of the ottoman empire

Was too busy to draw anything new, so let Ukraine be:
"Shut your fucking mouth, it suits you well."
How do you feel about russia, Belarus, and Ukraine being siblings in hetalia? Do you think the author should change that the same way he changed China and Japan being siblings?
To be honest — it makes me sad. There is a common propaganda theory that emerged in Russian empire if ever around the beginning of 19th century with the activisation of european nationalism in what is now Ukraine and Belarus, to justify whatever the repressive policies Russia wanted implemented on them because „we‘re brotherly nations so I‘m protecting you even if u don‘t like it“ which somehow escalated into „we are the same nation separated by artificial borders“ thing, and I think you can already see the problem with this.
And though Russia would usually be portrayed as the „older brother“, and, thankfully, at least Ukraine is the oldest in hetalia, still – it‘s pretty much the same old rotten story. Especially since hetalia fans often use Russia‘s surname for both Ukraine and Belarus, as if undermining their independence.
But I think rather than just changing it, an interesting spin could be applied to this. See, the entire „siblings“ idea is what I am more than sure Russia would want everyone to believe. And there‘s no doubt Ukraine and Belarus did not have the courage to speak up for a while. Until recently, almost. And now just imagine this kind of conversation:
— Well, yeah, hard to imagine he‘s been so horrible to you even though he‘s your brother…
—Erm…actually he‘s even not my brother…
—Wait wha–
But we all know we‘re not getting anything like this, well because..*sighs*…Himaruya…
Could you please draw some lietukr having a good time?🙏🙏🙏
pov: its Christmas and this shows up at your doorstep, so you know you‘re about to be robbed
They would go carolling together, mark my word
just wanted to draw something warm and cute, so hehe there you go (so tempted to write "me and who?")
MERRY CHRISTMAS TO EVERYONE WHO CELEBRATES IT BTW!!!!11
If you're able, I do recommend donating to United Help Ukraine, and their Gifts of Hope have a number of different options available for various needs (like holiday gifts for children, hand and foot warmers, first aid kits, etc.)
Them, NAFO, Saint Javelin, Timothy Snyder and Mark Hamill and Misha Collins (who all have fundraisers for things like drones, demining robots, and so forth), United24 in general etc. - and even if you're not comfortable donating to things for offensive purposes (like drones or helping get weapons) they have defensive or support options as well. There are numerous organizations (and United24 is really good as a central source for projects and ways to support).
Read books about Ukraine (you can find numerous recommendations in my posts or can ask), enjoy Ukrainian art and music and food 9ditto), and pressure your legislators (Americans can go here for an example or here) and support and boost organizations like Razom for Ukraine and Ukrainian individuals.
Even reddit has some helpful links and info
belarus in your own style?? ⬜🟥⬜👀
There you go anon, and sorry - it was supposed to be a NORMAL drawing but I got carried away a bit with the idea. I‘ll draw her normally at some point🙏🏼
This was the inspo btw (+ something else, her clothes is inspired by a particular portrait of a particular Belaruthian, if you reckognised which one, consider me impressed and well done on your Belaruthian history)
I like u, have a Ukraine sketch👉🏼
I feel like this song is very much her-coded, but here is also a version without my shitty handwriting on the sketch
Popular Christmas song "Carol of the Bells" is based on a Ukrainian song called "Shchedryk" and was originally arranged by Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych. In 1921 undercover soviet state agent asked to stay the night at composer's' family home. In the morning he killed Mykola Leontovych and robbed his family.
"Shchedryk" was created while Mykola Leontovych was staying in Pokrovsk, city the russians are desperately trying to capture and are turning into ruins right now:
I refuse to elaborate, this made sense in my head🎀
Polak screenshot redraw, but ridiculously exaggerated bc I need to practise drawing emotions😔🔨
Is Irina/Iryna okay?
Yeah, Iryna rather, and shortened/pet versions like Irunya/Ira/Ryna if you want that; tbh it also is quite a cool option and a popular name in Ukraine, and like…even Kateryna itself if fine, just not in that context and not the russified verision because whyyy
(upd: this has now been kindly updated by one of the admins 🥹, but the info I‘m referring to used to be there since like 2009, so I‘ll leave this post just for info)
oh, c’mon, naming a ukrainian character after one of the most anti-ukrainian figures in history?
I know no official name was given to her, but this shit just pissed me off, why would they list this fact on her wiki page as relevant to Ukraine? Ekaterina II abolished the ukrainian (semi) autonomy Cossack Hetmanate of 1764, ordered brutal destruction of Zaporiz'ka Sich in 1775 (a cossack state-military centre), EXPANDED. SERFDOM. INTO LEFT BANK AND SLOBOZHANSCHYNA DO I EVEN HAVE TO CONTINUE?? Russification?? Crimean Khanate Colonisation?? And that just being of the top of me head?? Hello?
I know it’s not that deep and Hetalia is meant to be irony BUT HOLY SHIT.
And also using russified version of her name Ekaterina as a reference to Katiusha rocket systems, ironically, the descendant of which, (GRAD BM-21) is bombing Ukrainian cities right now FUCK OFF. At least use Kateryna, the Ukrainian version.
From Himaruya’s suggested versions I prefer Maria; as Mariia and pet names Marichka (like ukrainian military mascot hehe), Marusya (a reference to a common Ukranian folklore character, Marusya Boguslavka (a rlly smart woman who helped cossaks out of captivity), Marusya Churai (semi-legendary folk songwriter of 17th century), Marusya from a folk song who poisoned a guy cuz he cheated, Marusya Sokolovska (a female rebel leader during 1917-21 war of independance) AND MANY MORE. I LOVE MY UKRAINIAN MARICHKAS.
[upd 2: it turned out that Himaruya never listed a name for her in the original post, so forget what I said on her surname]
