WHO THEY ARE:

Release The Pressure is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving heart health for Black women through education and preventative action.

WHAT WE DID:

❤️‍🩹 On March 03 and March 31, 2021, Release the Pressure ran LOUDR campaigns with Creatrs art to raise awareness about Black women's high blood pressure and the impact it has on the black community. The campaign’s goal was to get 300,000 Release the Pressure pledges to learn more about heart health by 2022. Two banners were created in honor of Women’s History Month that amplifies the image of self-care for black women. Engaging with the arts can be an act of self-care, self-love, and therapy for black communities. This campaign accomplished the following:

Tapped into the arts through storytelling to produce energizing conversation, content, and engagement around preventive heart health actions in a smart, informative and relatable way focused on self-care & art.

Increased Release The Pressure pledges (btw have you taken the pledge? ).

Engaged with trusted messengers (Black Women artists) to build the Release The Pressure brand through their online community – their “squads.”

Tumblr In The Wild

Have you ever seen a meme floating around somewhere in the great beyond—your family group chat, your friend’s Instagram story—and you’ve thought quietly to yourself, I saw that on Tumblr first, ha! Or maybe you even said it out loud. And then everyone looked at you funny. 

Well, this is a post about those special moments: seeing Tumblr in the wild, when a meme or trend or really good post breaches containment like a particularly powerful cryptid. 

First and foremost, in 2021, there was gaslight gatekeep girlboss, a meme that sprouted in Tumblr’s native soil early in the year. Following its spread to Twitter, it took the whole internet by storm until it became part of everyone’s standard vocabulary. 

Then there was the whole #2014tumblr phenomenon on TikTok, which continues to be a Whole Thing. Basically, people are obsessing over the historical aesthetic of this very website. From a mere seven years ago. Which has been WILD to see for all the people on Tumblr who were around to invent it.

In 2020, iconic Tumblr account @thatsbelievable, a compendium of Victorian-aesthetic jokes with a modern twist, had a successful post in the form of The Best Gorilla Joke of 1897. But when it went viral on Twitter in 2021, people uninitiated in Tumblr vibes believed it really was from 1897, and others had to jump in to clarify. 

We all had a good laugh at the Tumblr post about “vertically oriented igneous intrusion,” but many of you took a non-zero amount of offense at an aggregator website kicking off their reporting on the meme with the sentence, “Tumblr’s no longer popular, but that won’t stop content from spreading on other platforms.” Because come on! 

On Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest, there are a bunch of accounts devoted to reposting Tumblr screenshots, the most impressive being @exaltiora’s Twitter thread which runs to over 11,000 continuous screenshots of Tumblr posts! But as a Tumblr user so winningly put it, this is akin to selling bootleg tickets to the clown carnival. 

Finally, to cap off the year, we had the feminine urge meme. Like gaslight gatekeep girlboss, this one began on Tumblr and then flooded the channels on many other platforms. But WE know that a meme this good could only have come from one place: right here. In other words: do not cite the deep magic to me, witch. I was on Tumblr when it was posted.

The Gif Set

The gif set is one of Tumblr’s most renowned native flora. Its essential orderly cellular structure, each gif divided from the other by a neat strip of white space, is unmistakable.

Prior to the emergence of the gif set, Tumblr users were restricted to one image per post. Hard to imagine now!

Once unbound, creativity reached an apex. Able to capture fleeting moments and showcase them in alignment, the linear strictures of digital video were broken down. Gif-makers built a craft out of beautifying and arranging their instances of choice.

This is a prime example of Tumblr’s unique and irreplaceable ecology. Where else can one access the nearly limitless possibilities a gif set provides?

Images in motion propagate widely without any limits in many many places, but only on Tumblr are they able to all be viewed at once, in full. This simultaneity-simulacrum, silent but evocative—I believe it to be a pillar of Tumblr’s continued survival.

You up? Good.

Dr. Naomi Rowe-Gurney recently completed her PhD at the University of Leicester and is now working at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center as a postdoc through Howard University. As a planetary scientist for the James Webb Space Telescope, she’s an expert on the atmospheres of the ice giants in our solar system — Uranus and Neptune — and how the Webb telescope will be able to learn more about them.

The James Webb Space Telescope – fun facts:

Webb is so big it has to fold origami-style to fit into its rocket and will unfold like a “Transformer” in space.

Webb is about 100 times more powerful than the Hubble Space Telescope and designed to see the infrared, a region Hubble can only peek at.

With unprecedented sensitivity, it will peer back in time over 13.5 billion years to see the first galaxies born after the Big Bang––a part of space we’ve never seen.

It will study galaxies near and far, young and old, to understand how they evolve.

Webb will explore distant worlds and study the atmospheres of planets orbiting other stars, known as exoplanets, searching for chemical fingerprints of possible habitability.

About the class:

Participants will discuss SIFT Meditation and ways to incorporate it into daily life, then meditate with sound bowls from Buddah A Blessing LLC. Meditation simply puts sustained focus on something. SIFT is an acronym for Sensations, Images, Feelings, and Thoughts. SIFT stands for Sensations, Images, Feelings, and Thoughts. This is an excellent technique for youth to scan and get acquainted with their subjective experience. Jarrick will host a Meditation session where users can observe these SIFT’s and the Meditations ability to create space between them, their triggers, and responses. This will also allow participants to feel more confident if their identified triggers were to arise in daily life. SIFT meditation clears up our Mindspace to make more balanced decisions in tense situations.

Meet Jarrick

Jarrick The Floating Yogi has been practicing yoga and incorporating its philosophy into his life since 2014. He’s trained in Power, Dharma, and Ashtanga Yoga and holds a consistent Ashtanga practice to this day. For several years in his younger days, he was in a band, so he quickly took to Cymatics, the effects of sound, frequency, and vibration on matter and consciousness using sound bowls and other instruments. Jarrick was introduced to Yoga through the fanciful world of Japanese Anime. There he found a world of parallels through the teachings and parables. Jarrick’s kind and gentle manner is well suited to lead students of all levels to integrate the lessons learned on our mat into our daily lives.
