i think the problem that a lot of people who refuse to let go of harry potter have is that they think you expect them to have known it was shit from the start because people talk a lot about how it has been criticzed since its release which obviously is a response to people claiming that its now just trendy to hate on things we used to like and that includes harry potter. like no one expects you to have known it was shit when you were 10. those books were one of the first things i actually read and i loved them bc i was a dyslexic child with no friends and they were easy to read and i read some of them over 10 times in one year and i read all the weird nazi wizard bullshit and the antisemitic depictions of goblins and the racist caricatures and i still loved those books because i was Eight Years Of Age. and then later when i found out about jkrs transphobia and i read people talking about her other bigotry i realized in hindsight how bigoted those books were and now i dont like them because im a normal person who changes his opinions based on new information

Does Judaism have nuns or monks? I know it's taboo to not be married in Judaism but is there space for people who don't for whatever reason: mental illness, etc?

I wouldn't phrase it that it's taboo not to be married in Judaism, but rather that asceticism, sexual abstinence, and the general concept of withdrawing from the world are not Jewish values and building a family is. The entire underlying concept of institutions like nuns and monks is that it's holy to remove oneself from the world at large, holy never to have sexual relations, holy to deprive oneself of worldly pleasures. And that's not Judaism. We were put in this world to elevate physicality to a spiritual level, and you can't do that without interacting with physicality. Having a sumptuous meal is holy when it's for the purposes of a mitzvah (indeed, in a number of cases one MUST have a meal in order to do a mitzvah and it SHOULD be particularly delicious food). Having sex within the appropriate context is incredibly holy. And much of what exists in the physical world is inherently neutral, but can be elevated to holiness when used for a mitzvah.

An unmarried Jew (whether by choice or because they haven't found a partner despite wanting one) doesn't need to sequester themselves from the world and live simply to live a holy life; they'd actually be depriving themselves of many opportunities for holiness by doing so. Being married and building a family are significant values in Judaism, and it can sometimes be hard for unmarried adults because communities tend to be so family-focused, but that's still just one of many parts of living a Jewish life. In the world - not out of it.

The talk I gave tonight was primarily about how babies, as well as young children, experience hyperconsciousness, something that is often considered one of the main reasons why children at these stages are ‘difficult’ to handle.

Kids man, they encompass some of the most phenomenal thought processes and it is all driven by the fact that this whole world is completely new to them. If you want to see abstract ideas constructed in a matter of seconds, talk to a child. Their grasp is unbelievable.

Even if you feel that children whine, cry, and scream too much… in considering how they’re in a world they had no prior concept of, and are subject to an uncontrollable amount of stimuli every waking moment…. I still believe they’re handling it all fairly well.

This conference made me realize how much of a passion I have for destigmatizing childhood behaviors. There’s a sort of ‘Ahh..’ moment that people come to when they see that children actually have reasons for everything they do, that they shouldn’t be viewed as underdeveloped ‘functioning’ adults but should instead be recognized as humans in a separate yet equally important stage of life.

I’ve also been doing some work in researching and writing about children as an oppressed class, I’m finding ways to incorporate my previous sentiments into that.
